Al - Hayatt Medical Center
The Vision and the Journey

- The region was home to Amoud University and its new medical school, one of the most successful projects in post-civil-war Somaliland.
- The region lacked adequate medical facilities equipped to fully meet the healthcare needs of the community
- Many patients were going to the Middle East for medical treatment at great expense, sometimes for basic surgeries
- There was great potential for a modern medical facility to fill an obvious healthcare services gap
The Amoud Foundation Board of Directors made the decision in 2006 to build, from the ground up, a full-service hospital. With Amoud University medical school up and running, a full-service modern medical facility was needed to serve as a teaching and referral hospital. Our vision was to make the Amoud valley a premier destination for quality education and health services. A modern medical facility with the necessary modern medical equipment and qualified medical staff would compliment Amoud University and its medical school. It could also make advanced medical treatment available to the community at home, keeping much-needed financial resources currently spent abroad in the community.
At the time, we had no money. But we had a vision, faith in Allah (SWT), and the determination to spare no effort in raising the funds necessary to reach our goal. It has been quite a journey. Our board and volunteers began the hard work of raising funds from the community, knocking on doors of institutions big and small as well as
individual donors, and holding fundraising events. Before the end of 2006, we had raised enough funds for the purchase of the land with money left over for the site preparation. Thus started the story of Hayatt Hospital. After two years and hundreds of thousands of dollars from our generous donors, both individual and institutional, Hayatt hospital is now complete with a full-service hospital wing and an administration and teaching facilities wing. Medical equipment worth over $1,000,000.00 has also been delivered and installed. What started as an empty piece of land has been transformed into a full-service medical facility that will be an invaluable long-term asset for the community.
